Card Captor Sakura: The Movie 2 Review

Card Captor Sakura: The Movie 2 (The Sealed Card) picks up four months after the ending of the TV series.  That means that this movie should only be watched after completing all 70 episodes of the Card Captor Sakura series.  The four months since the end of the drama, Sakura has enjoyed her normal life during summer break.  That is, if you can call it normal.  Her eccentric friend Tomoyo and guardian beast Kero never cease to keep her busy.  And on top of that, Sakura has the lead role, the princess, coming up in the Nadesico Festival, the biggest event of the summer in Tomoeda.  Everything is going smoothly until one day Sakura begins to notice that some of her Cards are missing.  Around the same time, large objects like mailboxes and bridges begin to vanish from around the city.  While visiting the amusement park one day, Sakura senses the presence of a Clow Card.  Unsure of what to think, Sakura follows the presence of the Card, only to find herself face to face with a mysterious girl.  Sakura soon discovers that this girl was the source of the presence and the cause of the recent missing Cards.  But before she could do anything to capture it, the girl takes more of Sakura’s Cards and vanishes.

While attempting to evaluate the situation, Sakura receives a phone call from an acquaintance.  He informs her that under Clow Reed’s old house he had sealed a final Clow Card.  Whereas the 52 Cards previously encountered all had a positive magic, the Final Card was created with an equivalent negative magic.  While the other Cards all have the power to create something, the final one has the potential to erase everything in existence.  And on top of that, the Final Card has the same power as the other 52 combined.  Every time that Sakura loses another Card, the Final Card erases a part of the city itself.  The only way to stop the Final Card is to capture it, and unlike the other Clow Cards, this one comes with a high price.  In order to seal the Card, the dearest feeling of the person with the most magical power is exchanged.  This could not be much worse for Sakura who is still in the midst of emotional turmoil.  Having had someone confess their love to her, she still hasn’t returned with an answer about how she really feels.  Will she be able to tell him her true feelings?  Or will those feelings be lost forever in order to save those around her?  With the help of her friends, Sakura will fight on against the Final Clow Card in Card Captor Sakura: The Movie 2.

Music

I’m sure that anyone who has read my other reviews is aware of my view on the music in Card Captor Sakura, but I’ll reiterate here for those who haven’t.  Even considering that the music in Card Captor Sakura is some my favorite music in anime, the music in the 2nd Movie really stands out as spectacular.  Worth mentioning are certainly the ED theme, Ashita no Melody, and one of the BGM songs, Hontou no Omoi.  After having seen the 2nd Movie, the power that these songs have is amazing.  In terms of emotional recollection, Hontou no Omoi in particular is as powerful if not more then songs like Aozora from AIR and Eternal Snow from Full Moon wo Sagashite, at least in my opinion.  In any case, the 2nd Movie features fantastic music, you won’t be disappointed.

Story and Character Development

Oftentimes with anime movies that stem off from series, my fear is that character development will be completely ignored.  This is not the case at all in Card Captor Sakura: The Movie 2.  You can expect to see more of the same fantastic development from the TV series.  And despite the fact that the movie is not based upon the manga written by CLAMP, it connects to and finishes off the show perfectly.  The main purpose of the second movie is to bring closure to the story of Card Captor Sakura, which it is very effective in doing.  Also, since the ending of the manga and the anime are fairly different, if you ever decide to read the manga, you will be in for a few revelations you don’t get in the anime.  But in any case, the 2nd Movie pulls off an original storyline, well connected to the show and brings beautiful closure to Card Captor Sakura as a whole.

Final Word

If you have watched the Card Captor Sakura TV series, you would have to be rather crazy not to watch this movie.  It makes a powerful and necessary addition to the TV series, and I see it as mandatory for anyone who watched the 70 episodes that precede it.  Card Captor Sakura: The Movie 2 is easily one of my favorite anime films of all time.  The music, the story, and of course the awesome characters make it a great experience to watch from start to finish.
