Card Captor Sakura: The Movie Review

Just to answer the most common question upfront, Card Captor Sakura: The Movie should be watched following the 1st season (Episodes 1-35) but before the 2nd season.

Winter break is approaching quickly.  Performing her normal duties as a Card Captor and balancing that with her school life, Sakura is looking forward to the short break.  When shopping for a notebook one day, Sakura is given a chance to draw in the Tomoeda shops’ lottery.  And as luck would have it, she wins the grand prize: a free trip for 4 to Hong Kong!  So along with her best friend Tomoyo, guardian Kero, brother Touya, and love interest Yukito, Sakura sets off for Hong Kong.  But was it really luck that let Sakura have this chance?  As Clow Reed always said, “There are no coincidences in this world.”  To further add to the mystery of the trip, lately Sakura has been having strange dreams of a place filled with water.  With each passing dream, things become ever clearer.  While traveling the city, Sakura suddenly feels a strange presence, as if she were being watched.  After spotting two birds which seem to be the source of the presence, Sakura gives chase.  However, as she will soon discover, she is not the only one who felt this presence.  It seems Sakura’s group is not the only one from Tomoeda visiting Hong Kong.  There are strange powers at work in Hong Kong and these unknown forces will make Sakura to learn more about the past of the great sorcerer Clow Reed.  As things continue to unfold, Sakura will be forced to face an adversary beyond any she has faced before.  And if she can’t win, her loved ones will remain trapped forever!

Other Facts

Let’s be honest, this is Card Captor Sakura, the music is amazing!  From start to finish, the movie has perfect music.  It’s some of my favorite stuff to listen to both during the movie and when I’m just sitting around.  Also, the animation is the same quality that you can expect to see in the show itself.  It is well animated and there are no spots that I recall seeing a drop in the animation.  Considering it is a feature length film with a series as its background, the movie has considerable development.  The characters have your standard reintroduction at the beginning and everything else flows as it would in the show.  While I do not recommend seeing the movie without seeing the first season, you don’t need a mastery of what happened in the first 35 episodes in order to enjoy the movie.  It is self-contained; presenting an original story that begins and concludes in the course of the movie.

Final Word

If you’re a fan of Card Captor Sakura like I am, definitely don’t miss this movie. While it is not significant in the long run of Card Captor Sakura’s plot, it is still a great movie and another chance to see Sakura and all the other character you love in action.  It’s not as good as the second movie, but it is still one of my favorites.  Great music, great animation, great story.
