Full Moon wo Sagashite Review

Let me first state that if it weren’t for Throughhim413’s review and recommendation, this wouldn’t have been possible and I would never have seen such a great show. So lets get this mini-review started.

Story:

The story of the show follows Mitsuki as she makes her way through her last year of life. The story is one of the best written I have ever come across. While at first, it may not seem that dramatic in the first half of the show, the level of drama quickly picks up in the second half, almost completely erasing the comedy from the first half. This show did something to me that no other show has ever done before it: make me cry on more than one occasion, and I’m not just talking about a tear or two. It got to the point that I didn’t think it was possible for an anime to make me feel the emotions that I was feeling.

Music:

This show is focused around Mitsuki and her dream to become a famous singer, so obviously, there’s going to be some music. The opening themes performed by The Scanty, provide an upbeat start to each episode, however, I couldn’t help but feel that they were out of place at some points during the series. Good songs, but not as memorable as the endings were. On to the endings, which are performed by the group Changin’ My Life and sung by Myco, who is the VA of Mitsuki/Full Moon. The 4 themes, New Future, Myself, Eternal Snow and Love Chronicle are easily my favorite endings of all time. Each song can be heard within the show as songs the either Mitsuki or Full Moon sing and in my opinion, are very beautiful and emotional at points in the series. I’ve been listening to the 4 ending themes on repeat practically every moment since finishing the show.

Characters:

The characters in the show are what first got me hooked. Mitsuki is easily one of my favorite characters of all time and the most I’ve ever felt emotionally attached to. She is a very highly developed character throughout the show and the entire time I couldn’t help but root for her. The two main Shinigami, Takuto and Meroko, are very lovable characters, and account for most of the comedy throughout the series. Takuto is developed just as much as Mitsuki is and Meroko isn’t far behind. There are honestly too many characters to talk about, but each is developed during the show, some of the developments are very obvious, while some aren’t. Aside from Mitsuki and Takuto, I’d have to say my favorite character after that is Wakaouji-sensei. I really enjoyed the character designs too. While some of the males look alike, each of the female characters have their own look and are constantly changing outfits, adding a sense of realism. Then there are the outfits of the Shinigami, which isn’t something you’d see someone wearing during a normal day (Takuto’s Neko Mimi was a very nice touch).

Final Thoughts:

Full Moon wo Sagashite quickly became my favorite anime of all time. By episode 10, it was already in my top 10 and once I reached the halfway point, before the best moments in the show, I had already accepted it as my number one anime. Now that I’ve finished it, it has easily left everything else I have seen in the dust, and I can’t imagine something capable of challenging that ranking. The story is incredible in the emotions that it made me feel and it’s the first anime to occupy my mind for days on end for a long time. The ending themes are great pieces of music, and even if you aren’t a fan of these kinds of shows, I’d still recommend getting the OSTs and singles. Like with throughhim413, this show gets my highest recommendations. Even if you’re not a fan of Mahou Shoujo or just Shoujo in general, I think anyone will enjoy this show. I hope that by writing this second review, it will convince even more people to check out this show. While I'm sure I may get some heat for giving it this, but in my mind, it has truly earned it. One day it may change, it may never change, but needless to say, this isn’t one that I’ll be forgetting anytime soon.
