Sailor Moon Review Season 1 Review

    Sailor Moon Season 1 Review

(Note: This review only is for the first season, also known as the first 46 episodes)

Sailor Moon is a peculiar show. I've seen fans avoid it because it's a "girl show". I've seen parodies, bashes, and hate sites about the show. But like it or not, Sailor Moon is one of the anime that built modern day anime.

Sailor Moon, is about a young girl named Usagi who has a run in with a talking cat that awakens her ability to transform into the soldier of love Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon undertakes the task of fighting the dark kingdom, and trying to awake the Moon Princess, and what not.

So, pretty much every episode of Sailor Moon plays out in a particular pattern. Usagi goes to school, eats, sleeps and also spends time with her friends, occasionally she'll run into Mamoru (Who is secretly Tuxedo Mask), who will constantly insult and bicker with Usagi. Then she'll wind up going to some place, and then realize that the Dark Kingdom has in one way or another taken over the place, she'll transform, and fight the bad guys, and win, in the name of Justice and Love, with the help of her fellow Sailor Soldiers and Tuxedo Mask.

Sailor Moon works a lot like Spiderman. Every episode Usagi will wind up going someplace, and meting a villain or monster. For example there's an episode where Usagi starts feeling fat, so she decides to go join a fitness club, which coincidently has been taken over by the dark kingdom, and she'll fight a monster.

As the show goes on, more and more characters get introduced. Like Ami, a really smart girl that becomes Sailor Mercury, with the element of water. There's Rei, the Shinto Priestess who is Sailor Mars, the "fire" element. Makato, Sailor Jupiter the "Thunder" element, and Minako, Sailor Venus.

The story isn't a masterpiece, but the episodes are fun to watch, and don't require a major mental requirement, it's by no means a deep anime. What it does have though, is a strong cast of mostly likeable characters, the show deals with friendship, love, confidence, and giving it your all, like most long, young person oriented anime.  Sailor Moon does have it's touching, dramatic moments. Some people may be surprised to know that there actually characters in the show that die, or wind up frozen for an eternity.

The animation and music? Well they're starting to show age, the show dates back to 1992, so it looks pretty decent, but it depends on the format you're watching on, because of Sailor Moon's exposure, there's lots of copies of it out there that range from terrible, degrading *the generation fan subs, to RM format subtitled episodes, and there's  some with pretty good quality. As for the music, in my opinion it's just all right. The theme song is catchy, to be honest I never sat through the ending credits to see what the ending song was like.

So, in the long run is Sailor Moon a good anime? Sure. It's a neat show, it's a nice, episodic show, so you don't have to make a major commitment to it, it's got likeable characters, and it’s great for kids. Of course, you have to watch out for the horrible edited versions, and the really rabid Sailor Moon fans, but all in all, Sailor Moon is definitely a watch able anime if you give it a chance.
